Sam's life had all gone wrong since she'd walked away from Nick. She'd married an abusive guy, and had Ally. Allison had become her whole entire world. But she had a secret, she was still in love with Nick. And nobody in town knew that her husband beat on her. He beat her in areas that she could cover up. Charles was loved by practically the whole town, and it made her sick.
He showed off Sam and Ally like they were show-horses or something, prizes that he won. She always had to go out in public in really expensive clothing. Clothing that Sam had really come to despise. Clothing like that simply was not her. She had grown up on a farm, and had constantly worn ripped up jeans and such. Now that, was her. But she hadn't worn jeans like that in years. Not since Nick anyway. Because Nick had liked her for who she was. Not Charles. But, she'd made her choice. She was with the guy she was with because of choices. Choices that had to do with Nick.
She'd wanted Nick to be able to accomplish anything. And she thought that she would have only slowed him down. She thought that he deserved better then her. Right after the night that she and Nick had slept together, she had had this feeling that she was pregnant. She knew that tying him down with a wife and a baby would make it harder for him to accomplish his dreams. She wasn't sure though if she hadn't made a mistake.
She didn't think that she'd made a mistake when she heard that Nick had gone to college and was doing really well. It was great to hear that. That was all she wanted for him. What she didn't ask his parents was if he was married or any of that. It was wrong, but she knew it would kill her if he was married. But, she'd made her choice.
That day that she had ended it kept repeating itself in Sam's mind. She had simply told him that it was over. He'd demanded to know why, and she had simply said that it wasn't working between them anymore, that he'd be better off without her. She walked away, not listening to his pleadings. And she didn't listen when he tried hard to make her stay after that. It was wrong. Totally wrong, and she knew that now. What right had she to keep his child from him? But what could she do about it now? She could just imagine what a phone call to Nick telling him that he had a daughter, would be.
Uh, yeah Nick. It's me, Sam. Your high-school sweetheart? Your best friend for a long time? Well uh, you're probably married by now. But I just want to let you know that I broke up with you cause I didn't want to tie you down. And well, you are the father of my baby. I'm sorry I didn't tell you. But I thought that you deserved better then to be tied down with a wife and child. I wanted you to reach your dreams." Oh yeah, a conversation like that would go over so well.
There was a huge reason why Sam knew she could never let Nick enter her life. That huge reason was Charles. She never wanted Nick to get hurt, and Charles would hurt Nick. But, she figured that she didn't have to worry about that. She figured that Nick was either happily involved with someone, or even married. She couldn't break into that at all.
It hurt to think of him married, but she deserved it. She had gone for the wrong guy. She didn't regret having a child with Nick. They wouldn't really have had sex though. But that night, had been awful. It had been the night of her mother's death. Sick with grief, she had called Nick up. She hadn't wanted to be alone that night. One thing had led to another, and she had ended up pregnant. She didn't regret a single moment of it. Nick had always been kind and gentle with her. And she had wanted to have sex with him as much as he had with her. And as a result of that night, she had Ally. So she could not regret it.
But other things, she did regret. And all she wanted, was a better life for her daughter. Hopefully her daughter, would make so much better choices than she had.
It was around 10 in the morning, and Sam and her daughter Ally could be found in the market. Ally was sitting in the cart seat, and Sam was pushing the cart down the aisles ocassionally grabbing things and putting them in the cart. Sam was dressed elegantly in a light pink blouse and some black dress pants. But she was without the usual diamonds and such that she usually wore. But that was only because Charles was out of town and couldn't get mad at her when she chose not to wear the expensive diamonds and other jewlery that he bought for her. She loved when Charles was out of town for business. She didn't have to fear going home and him beating her for burning the dinner, or other little things like that.
She looked beautiful. Not too different then when she'd been with Nick other then the fact that she dressed in more expensive clothing. But there was also a sadness in her eyes that once had not been there at all. She felt beaten. But she was not thinking about any of that. She tried not to think about how her life was nowadays. She tried hard not to think too much about Nick. But thoughts of Nick, she couldn't seem to stop. Speaking of which.......
"Did you know that Nick Williams is coming back to town?" the town's major gossip lady asked another gossip lady as she pushed her cart down the aisle that Sam and Ally were in. Both ladies dared glance at Sam, and though Sam suddenly felt a lot of emotions all at once, she said nothing. She just pushed her cart some more and pretended to be looking at some cake mixes as she listened some more.
"No really?" The other lady asked excitingly.
"Yes really. He's coming home from college. I hear he was really successful. Good grades. Got his degree. Now he's coming home," the other continued.
Sam's heart began to pound. Nick was coming home? She did not say his name out loud, but she suddenly felt a lot of emotions she tried not to feel. She was still so in love with him. So very much in love. And hearing that he was coming back to town? Well, in a way it felt great. But then her heart sank. Charles. She'd have to make sure to stay away from Nick. She looked down at Ally. Nick couldn't find out that Ally was his daughter. And he could not find out that Charles was beating her. Her life, she'd have to keep hidden.
Once out of earshot to the two ladies, she dared utter the name she dared not utter at all. "Nick," she said softly to herself. She couldn't believe it. He was coming home. She went down another aisle and continued to purchase things, but her mind was not on the groceries. She tried to listen to Ally's chatter, and nodded ocassionally. Luckily, Ally was mostly talking to her barbie dolls that she had brought along. She just couldn't believe it. Nick was coming home.
